AI Video vs Live-Action Video for Singapore Businesses: Which Should You Choose?

Author: Joshua LimPublished Updated 4 min read

AI video vs live-action video production in Singapore, comparing AI-generated visuals with a professional film crew shooting commercial video content.

Use live action when the video depends on real people, real places or an exact product. Use AI when the scene is too costly, slow or impossible to film, or when you need many versions fast. For most brand videos, a hybrid works best: real footage for what must be real, AI for the rest.

I’m Joshua Lim, a Malaysia-based producer, filmmaker and videographer with 15+ years in production. I make live-action, AI and hybrid films for brands and agencies in Malaysia, Singapore and the region. This guide helps you decide before you brief a studio, and lists the questions to ask.

The three approaches

ApproachWhat it isBest for
Live actionReal crew, locations and people on cameraLeaders, staff, customers, events, product demos
HybridReal footage combined with AI for scenes, effects, upscaling, storyboards or voiceBrand films, campaigns, explainers with a real product
Fully AI-nativeNarrative, visuals, voice, music and art direction generated and edited digitallyConcept films, AI drama, social content, fast multi-version campaigns

How much of the video is actually AI-generated?

This is the first question to ask any studio. “AI video” can mean three different things:

  • AI-assisted: AI helps with scripting, storyboards, upscaling or clean-up, but the footage is filmed.
  • Hybrid: filmed footage plus AI-generated scenes or effects.
  • Fully AI-native: every shot is generated.

Ask for the split in writing, shot by shot if possible, so the price and the claims match what was made.

Can AI match our brand’s look and our exact product?

Partly, and it depends on the method.

  • Brand look: consistent colour, style and mood are achievable with a locked visual direction, reference images and a controlled editing and grading pass.
  • Characters: keeping the same face and costume across many shots is possible but needs planning and selection. Expect some rejected shots.
  • Your actual product: AI can drift on details such as logos, labels, buttons and proportions. For anything that must be exact, I recommend filming or photographing the real product and placing it into AI-generated scenes.

Send your brand guidelines, logos, product photos and reference videos at the start. They decide how consistent the result can be.

Does a Singapore business need live action?

SituationSuggested approach
CEO message, staff stories, customer testimonialsLive action
Product demo showing real functionLive action or hybrid with real product footage
Brand film with a creative conceptHybrid or AI-native
Period setting, fantasy or hard-to-reach locationAI or hybrid
Social content in many versions and languagesAI-native or hybrid
Regulated content (finance, healthcare)Follow compliance rules first, then choose

Regulated content needs a compliance review whichever method you use.

Disclosure and consent

  • Tell viewers when it matters. If an AI presenter might be mistaken for a real person, say it is AI-generated. Singapore’s advertising guidelines expect honest marketing communications.
  • Get written consent before creating an AI version of a real person, including staff. State the uses, the duration and what happens if they leave.
  • Check claims. AI can produce wrong text, numbers and captions. Review every line.

This is general guidance, not legal advice. Check your own legal or compliance team for regulated work.

Cost and time compared

The full cost and timeline comparison is in my guide to AI video production cost and turnaround in Singapore. In short: AI often costs less and finishes sooner where it replaces crew, venues, talent and travel. Where the video needs real people, live action stays the better choice.

Questions to ask any AI video studio

  1. How much of the final video is AI-generated, shot by shot?
  2. How will you keep characters and the product consistent?
  3. Which tools do you use, and do they allow commercial use?
  4. Who owns the final video, and can I use it in paid ads?
  5. How many revision rounds are included?
  6. How do you handle voice, and do you need consent for any likeness?
  7. Can you show finished AI work for a brief like mine?

Frequently asked questions

Do I need live-action filming, or can the video be 100% AI? It can be 100% AI if no real person or exact product needs to appear. If you need real staff, customers or a precise product, use live action or a hybrid.

How much of the video is generated by AI? That depends on the approach. AI-assisted films are mostly filmed, hybrids mix both, and AI-native films generate every shot. Ask for the split in writing.

Can AI keep my brand’s look and product consistent? Brand style and characters can be kept consistent with planning. For products that must be exact, combine real product footage with AI scenes.

Is AI video safe to use for a corporate brand? Yes, with care: confirm commercial usage rights, get consent for any real likeness, disclose AI presenters where relevant and review all text and claims.

What is a hybrid video? A video that combines real footage with AI-generated scenes, effects or voice, so real elements stay real and AI covers what would be too costly or impossible to film.

Can you make AI videos for companies outside Malaysia? Yes. AI production is done remotely, and I work with brands and agencies in Singapore and across Asia.
